يمتلئ مسرح علي عبد النبي الزيدي بصور العذاب، وجملة العذاب هنا أعم وأشمل من أي تعبير آخر مثل التشاؤم والحزن والجزع مثلاً، فالعذاب يمثل الهم الأكبر في مسرح الزيدى بشكل عام، وفى مسرحية الشهداء لا يدخلون الجنة على وجه الخصوص.
وفكرة العذاب الذي يتجرعه الجميع الشهيد وأمه بلا تفسير واضح يفض إلى فكرة العقاب العام الذي يبدو إلى حد ما مقبولاً من جانب العقل، خاصة الشعور بالخطيئة، الذي جعل كلاً من شهيد1، وشهيد2، يعترف أنه أصلاً لا يستحق أن يكون شهيداً خاصة بعد ما تم الزج بهم فى حروب مدمرة لا طائل منها إلا للسادة أصحاب المصالح العليا، ولا دخل للدين بها سوى وهم استخدمه الساسة للحث على الدخول فى الحروب لجنى ثمار خاصة بهم. ليبدو كلا الشهيدين وكأنهم فى حالة من الصلب الدائم انتقاداً لأمل غامض لن يأتي. وهنا يقترب الزيدي من مسرح بيكيت كثيراً في لعبة التفكير في الخطيئة المرتكبة وهي استخدام آلة الحرب للقتل بلا مبرر ولا هدف حقيقي.
لتتحول المسرحية إلى وجهة نظر مؤلفها نحو الحرب وما تنتجه من دمار وخراب وأوهام، لتتحول وجهة النظر ذاتها إلى أحد أهم صور العذاب في مسرح علي عبد النبي الزيدي.
