The Semiotic Signification of the Image in the Political Film

This study seeks to uncover the semiotic structure of meaning produced by the cinematic image within the political film, viewing the image as a layered system capable of generating meaning, reshaping perception, and reconstructing the viewer’s understanding of political reality. Through a close reading of selected scenes from El Conde, which intertwines reality with imagination, the research examines how the cinematic image becomes a tool for decoding political discourse and exposing its latent mechanisms of power.
The study explores the multi-level operation of the image through the interplay of denotation, connotation, and symbolism, analyzing how visual signs interact to build meaning and guide the viewer toward a deeper understanding of political contexts. By employing a semiotic approach, the research reveals how the political film mobilizes visual elements—such as composition, lighting, movement, and mise-en-scène—to construct ideological positions and shape the viewer’s interpretive framework.
Furthermore, the study explains how the cinematic image achieves semantic displacement, allowing it to exceed mere representation and create new layers of meaning that critique political authority. This displacement opens a broader discursive space in which the viewer can negotiate meaning beyond the surface of the image, thereby producing a predictive dimension that enables reading what lies behind events.
The study concludes that the image in the political film is not a neutral reflective medium but a semiotic field that constructs meaning through layered visual signs, granting the political film an enhanced capacity to generate meanings, influence interpretation, and orient viewers toward political discourse.
